To change the browser settings to allow mixed content, follow the instructions below:
Three symptoms indicate when a browser is blocking GradPoint content due to its mixed content controls:
- The Browser Tune-up test shows only Javascript and does not show all of the required plug-ins needed for GradPoint.
- A lesson will not load; it shows a blank page in the lesson player.
- Text-to-speech will not play audio content in a lesson.
Solution
This issue is caused by the browser preventing the display of mixed content, which is secure (https) and unsecure (http). Change the browser settings to allow mixed content by following the instructions for your browser.
Chrome
Chrome version 21 or later blocks mixed content by default. It does not provide a message to the users, so they may not know that the content in GradPoint is being blocked by the browser. The block appears at the page level, so you may need to unblock pages more than once while working on different content pages in GradPoint.
The indicator for mixed content is a shield icon.
Unblock the page contents in Chrome:
- Click the shield icon in the far right of the address bar.
- In the pop-up window, click Load anyway or Load unsafe script (depending on your Chrome version):
Note: For Chrome 20 or earlier, the icon appears on the left with a lock icon instead of a shield. Click the Load anyway button to allow the content page to load.
Set your Chrome browser to always allow mixed content:
- In an open Chrome browser, press Ctrl+Shift+Q on your keyboard to force close Chrome.
Chrome must be fully closed before the next steps. - Right-click the Chrome desktop icon (or Start Menu link).
- Select Properties.
- At the end of the existing information in the Target field, add: " --allow-running-insecure-content"
(there is a space before the first dash) - Click OK.
- Open Chrome and try to launch the content that was blocked earlier. It should work now.
Caution: When using this option, Chrome will no longer check for insecure content of any web page (not just GradPoint).
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer blocks mixed content by default. It provides a pop-up message that appears for only a short time, so you may need to refresh the page if you miss unblocking content. This browser blocks mixed content at the page level, so you may need to unblock pages more than once while working on different content pages in GradPoint.
Internet Explorer 9 or later displays a pop-up message at the bottom of the page when a mixed content block is triggered. Click Show all content when it appears.
Earlier versions of Internet Explorer display a different message. When it appears, click No so that Internet Explorer delivers both content types on the page.
Turn off this Internet Explorer prompt so that all GradPoint pages are allowed:
- In Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options.
- Select the Security tab.
- Click the Internet zone icon.
Note: If you have Trusted zone defined and the GradPoint URLs are in this zone, select the Trusted zone instead. - Click the Custom Level button.
- Scroll down the settings list to Miscellaneous. Select Enable for Display mixed content instead of Prompt.
- Click Yes.
- Click Apply then OK.
- Restart Internet Explorer.
Firefox
Firefox blocks mixed content by default. It does not provide a message to the users, so they may not know that the content in GradPoint is being blocked by the browser. In addition, the block appears at the page level, so you may need to unblock pages more than once while working on different content pages in GradPoint.
The Firefox indicator for mixed content is a shield icon in the far left of the address bar. Click the shield and change the option to Disable Protection on This Page.
Firefox does not have a universal setting to consistently allow mixed content. Users need to disable protection when blocked.
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge blocks mixed content by default. It does not provide a message to the users, so they may not know that the content in GradPoint is being blocked by the browser. The block appears at the page level, so you may need to unblock pages more than once while working on different content pages in GradPoint.
Select see all content, it will reload and load the blocked content.
Safari
Safari does not block mixed content like other browsers do so this should not be an issue.
