Some students experience a period of social adjustment when attending a virtual school compared to a bricks-and-mortar school environment. It’s important for students to have continued opportunities to spend time with others. There are many local venues that provide opportunities for socialization. Since the schedule of an online school allows students to set their own schedules, time may be allocated to take advantage of these socialization opportunities.
When planning ways to keep your student involved in extra-curricular and social activities, consider your student’s personality, goals, needs, and interests. For example, is your student shy and uncomfortable around others? Would a large group setting be intimidating? If so, consider small group or partner activities. But if your shy child’s goal is to grow increasingly comfortable around others, look for activities that will challenge him to be with others without being overwhelming. Does your student want to be a better communicator? Does your student love performing and being the center of attention? Try a community theater. As you take into account your student’s personality, goals, needs, and interests, look into some of the suggested activities below and determine which might be the best fit:

- Local food bank or similar organization in need of volunteers
- Youth activist-type groups or events promoting a cause
Social Media
- School Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram group (not available at all schools)
- Join or schedule get-togethers (e.g., hiking, museums, parks, picnics) using social media
