Matching question options
Pearson Connexus allows you to set these up in various ways:
Matching questions: drop-down inline list
You can set up a Matching question to list the static values on the left in a list with a drop-down menu of the answer options at the end of each.
For this option:
- Check Show inline box on the Interaction card.
- Place the static values on the left.
- Place the answer option matches to the right (these will appear in the drop-down menus).
- Note: You will be prompted to Insert placeholder; however, you can ignore this as they are not necessary for this question format.
Follow the directions below to complete.
Matching questions: drop-down inline question
You can set up a Matching question to insert answer option drop-downs within the body of the question.
For this option:
- Check the Show inline box on the Interaction card.
- Place the cursor where you want the drop-down menus to appear and click Insert placeholder.
- Place the answer option matches to the right (these will appear in the drop-down menus).
- POC automatically populates the fields on the left with an as; don't delete them (they won't appear onscreen for students).

Matching questions: drag and drop
You can format the Matching questions to automatically list answer targets on the left and draggable answer options (text and/or media) on the right. Pearson Connexus allows you to include additional distractors if you want (notice that the watermelon and mango images don't have a text match). Students can drag the answers to the targets they think match.
For this option, scroll to the Interaction card of the question editor:
- Check the Drag and drop box.
- Provide a Choices title that appears with the draggable answer choices (optional).
- Specify a Choices orientation, which determines where the answer choices sit in relationship to the category targets (optional).
- Specify the:
- Choice width and Choice height, which is the width and height of each draggable choice (optional). If you don't specify a size, Pearson Connexus dynamically sizes to the content you use.
- Answer width and Answer height, which is the width and height of each category target (optional). The category targets dynamically expand horizontally to accommodate choices if needed.
- If you want the choices to be usable only once, click the Remove used choices from list.

You can place answer targets within sentences, and create a list of draggable answers (text and/or media) to accompany them. Students can drag the answers to the targets they think match.

- Check the Maintain response order and Drag and drop boxes.
- Provide a Choices title that appears with the draggable answer choices (optional).
- Specify a Choices orientation, which determines where the answer choices sit in relationship to the category targets (optional).
- Specify the:
- Choice width and Choice height, which is the width and height of each draggable choice (optional). If you don't specify a size, Pearson Connexus dynamically sizes to the content you use.
- Answer width and Answer height, which is the width and height of each category target (optional). The category targets dynamically expand horizontally to accommodate choices if needed.
- If you want the choices to be usable only once, click the Remove used choices from list.
- Check the Show inline box.

Matching questions: graphic drag and drop
You can format the Matching questions as graphic drag-and-drop interactions where you give students an image with targets, and a list of draggable answer options that they can drag and drop on those targets.
- Set an image as the backdrop for your answer targets on the left.
- Place and size the targets anywhere on the image.
- Create a list of answer options (text and/or media) that are displayed on the right under Choices.
- Learners can drag the answer options to the content they match on the image.
For this option, check the Drag and drop and Graphic boxes in the Interaction card of the question editor. If you want the choices to be usable only once, click the Remove used choices from list.

Matching questions: categorization
You can design Matching questions that ask students to match words or images with a category they fit in. Categorization questions can use:

Create Matching questions
Matching questions can be added to assessments and practice questions activities.
- Add the Assessment or Practice Questions activity.
- Add a matching question to the activity.
- Follow the directions, below.
Question content
- Specify how many Points the question is worth.
- Enter the question as you want it displayed to students.
- Pair your matches as you enter them, so that the value for 1. matches the value for a.,2.matches b., and so forth.
- Two matches are included by default; click Add match if you want more.
- Where available, you can click Add distractor, which allows you to create answer options that don't align with anything (to increase difficulty).
- If you are building a Matching question with inline targets or a dropdown inline question, you are prompted to add placeholders to the question where the answer options should appear. Place the cursor where you want them and click insert placeholder. To delete placeholders, place the cursor at the end of the placeholder and hit ctrl + delete.
Note: If you are building a Matching dropdown inline list format, you will be prompted to Insert placeholders, but you don't need them.

Feedback
Click Add feedback to create various types of feedback.
Interaction
To manage the question's Interaction:
- Check the Maintain response order box to randomize only the order of the first column (1.,2., etc). Otherwise both column orders are randomized.
- Use the Categorization box to create a question.
- Check Drag and drop if you're building drag-and-drop questions. If you check the Drag and drop box, you can:
- Provide a Choices title that appears with the draggable answer choices (optional).
- Specify a Choices orientation, which determines where the answer choices sit in relationship to the category targets (optional).
- Specify the:
- Choice width and Choice height, which is the width and height of each draggable choice (optional). If you don't specify a size, Pearson Connexus dynamically sizes to the content you use.
- Answer width and Answer height, which is the width and height of each category target (optional). The category targets dynamically expand horizontally to accommodate choices if needed.
- Check Remove Used choices from list it if you want each answer option to be used only once, and answer options will be removed from the list once they've been placed. Not available for Dropdown list or Categorization questions.
- Check the Graphic checkbox to create a Graphic drag-and-drop matching activity, where you can place the answer target on an image and ask learners to match answer options (text and/or media) to data in the image.
- Note the accessibility message: Graphic questions are not accessible for users who require keyboard-only access or screen readers.
- Check the Show inline box to create Dropdown inline list questions or Dropdown inline questions.
- Check Display workspace to give students a rich text editor where they can record their notes and processes as they work on the question.
- Students can also record and upload video or audio responses as part of their notes.
- If one or more passages have been included in the activity, you can select one to attach to this question from the Include passage drop-down menu.
- Provide a Custom question definition (contact support for additional assistance).
Metadata
The Metadata card lets you attach information to questions:
- Assign a difficulty level to each question can help track your overall assessment difficulty.
- Add a question to an existing group.
- When putting questions in an assessment activity, groups are used to assign questions to assessment question pools.
- When putting questions in a practice questions activity, Groups are used to assign questions specific attempt limits.
- The question ID is a unique identifier for this question.
Objective mastery
From the Objective mastery card, you can align the question with objective(s).
This makes it possible to set up Formative and Remediation assessments.
Score
Use the Score card to indicate:
- If you want to allow for Partial credit.
- And, if so, if you want to automatically Round the score.
- If you want the question to count as Extra credit.
Variables
With the Variables section, you can create a range or list of variables for use in the question.
Calculator
Check the appropriate box(es) to provide students with one or more of the following calculators to use with this question (Basic, Standard, and/or Scientific). This can also be specified for the entire activity with the Assessment activity editor.
Protractor
Make a protractor available to students while they complete this question. This can also be specified for the entire activity with the Assessment activity editor.
Ruler
Make one or more rulers (6 inch, 12 inch, 15 centimeter, 30 centimeter) available to students while they complete this question. This can also be specified for the entire activity with the Assessment activity editor.
Companion Material
Click Add material in Companion Material to attach any supplemental documents students need to complete this question. You can do this by:
- Pointing to existing resources in the course.
- Uploading new files (PDFs only).
Students can access Companion material by clicking the Files icon in the toolbar.
